The Flying Pig Grill & Cantina has to be my favorite places in the Rio Grande Valley. Not only because they all know me by name, but because the food and drinks are AMAZING, yes AMAZING! I have been going to "the pig" since 2012, because I heard they had Chimay on tap (FYI Chimay is my favorite beer). I'll never forget my first visit with my friend Jaime, I really did not know what to expect. We make our way to the bar, sit down, order our Chimay and the owner asked if it's our first time at his establishment, I guess he could tell we were not regulars. He mentioned he was going to make some drinks and gave us samples of the “bloody pig”, on that day I knew I would be coming back for more.
The Flying Pig has a unique beer selection that you can't find anywhere else in the Valley. Hector Burnias, owner, goes out of his way to go to breweries all across the state to make sure he has the newest stuff. He has awesome events to showcase the beer by having tap takeovers, pint nights or other events. It is nice when he has tap takeovers, because a pint glass from the featured brewery is usually included with your first pint. He also has all the seasonal beers, and if you are a regular he always makes sure he has your favorite beer. For those who are not fans of craft or specialty beers, there are plenty of domestic beers available.
My other favorite thing from the Flying Pig is their one of a kind cocktails. Hector and his staff can whip up some pretty elaborate stuff!!! Don't expect to get your cocktail quick because Hector takes his time to make them just right. Oh wait, did I also forget to mention Hector works the bar and makes these one of a kind drinks? I've had many cocktails there, but my favorites are the Gin Mule, Mint Julep, Bloody Pig & Amelia. I love the fact they use freshly squeezed juice and fresh herbs for their drinks. I encourage everyone to try one of their signature drinks, trust me you will not regret it.
The food menu at the Flying Pig has the standard bar fare such as nachos, burgers, hot dogs and wings. While the menu is nothing out of this world, the flavor and taste is! You must try the pork shanks as appetizer; the meat just falls off the bone! The monster burger lives up to its name, all the way up to the fried egg on top and don't forget to try their Kobe beef burger. One of my recent favorites has been the fried macaroni, I love dumping them in ranch or ketchup.
There is always something going on at "the pig", Wing Night, Tap Takeovers, Pint Night, BBQ cook-offs, etc. I have participated in the cook-offs with my girlfriends and it's pretty awesome! (We didn’t win but we will try again this year). Everyone must make their way to "the pig" at one point or another. Even if it's just for a cold beer, you will like the ambiance. On the weekend you will also find live music. Follow them on Facebook so you can always be up to date!
