If you have not gone to Toddle Inn or “The Sheriffs Place” you are missing out on a Brownsville institution! Since 1972, the Perez family led by Alex and later his son Mark have served customers from their location on Central Blvd. When you walk in you see friendly faces and the owner, Mark Perez, is there to greet you. The nickname “The Sheriffs Place” and the slogan “We Give Flavor Justice” is fitting because Alex Perez served as Sheriff of Cameron County for 12 years (1984-1996). In 2005 Mark took over as owner and operator of the business.
We arrived around 9AM and I started off with coffee and was delighted that it was served in a large mug and was hot, perfect for a chilly morning. Before I get too far, my intention was not to have a 3 course breakfast, it just happened that way so I could taste a good variety off the menu. The first thing I tried was a small cup of menudo and the first thing I noticed was that it was piping hot, not too greasy and had plenty of spice. The menudo was accompanied by a small barbacoa taco and that was very savory! I ate the entire menudo and taco, forgetting my order was on its way.
I ordered the chorizo omelet that comes with hash browns and a homemade flour tortilla (you had the option to order bread or tortillas) and I took it up a notch and ordered a side of bacon (Who doesn't love bacon??). I was shocked when I saw the size of the plate. The omelet was cooked perfectly and loaded with chorizo, tomatoes and bell peppers. I topped it with my choice of 3 fresh salsas. As for the bacon, well let me just tell you, it was cooked to perfection! The bacon slices were meaty and oh so delicious! I did not eat the entire plate, it was so much food! I have to admit Toddle Inn does serve a lot of food! I finished my 3 course breakfast with some arroz con leche sprinkled with cinnamon. I’m not a big fan of arroz con leche because sometimes its so runny and doesn't taste like anything, well I was very impressed with this one! Make sure to try it out.
Overall I had a great experience, and a full stomach! They have a lot of items on the menu and reasonable prices for the amount of food they serve. They also serve lunch and are now open for dinner Friday-Sunday. After breakfast I talked to Mark for a bit and he mentioned that his #1 priority is to make customers happy and use high quality products. He spoke of the carne guisada and his enchiladas with his homemade sauce. They have daily specials for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Don't forget to make your way to the Toddle Inn and I hope your experience is enjoyable like it was for me!
