On January 18 2016, The Mr. Amigo Association held its annual Taste of La Frontera in Brownsville. This year featured over 25 local restaurants from both sides of the border. Food sampling was provided by each restaurant, Los Trevis Drive Thru provided Micheladas and Brownsville Beer Fest, Glazer's Distributors & Tequilada provided the beer and spirits.
This event is attended by many and you want to get their early to avoid the lines. As you enter, you are greeted by members of Mr. Amigo Association and the first thing I noticed as I walked in was that it smelled amazing. I sampled food from New York Deli, Shenanigans, Bigo's Bar & Grill, Carnitas Marchant, La Taverna Bar & Grill, El Piquin Sabores Mexicanos and Tacos Tostadas Govea.
I love eating at New York Deli so I knew I had to try whatever they were serving, after all their potato salad is my favorite! I had never tried Tacos Tostadas Govea and I am glad I did because they were so good! Their meat was so tender and both the red and green salsas were spicy! Carnitas Marchant provided me with 2 tacos; one was cochinita pibil and the other carnitas. The carnitas taco was heavenly and they should have just given me 4! Now, I am very picky when it comes to cochinita pibli because I have tasted so many and it's sad to say that I was not impressed, but I did hear overhear others saying they liked it. La Taverna Bar & Grill had chicharon de pescado & ceviche; I only tried the chicharon but I enjoyed it, they gave it to me with some homemade slaw and I would definitely go to their restaurant and order this. I have always been a fan of the shrimp ceviche from Shenanigan's so they did not disappoint! Everywhere I looked people were enjoying their food and complimenting all of the restaurants.
At the bar I ordered a Tecate Beer and then went to Los Trevi Drive Thru booth to get a Michelada. I believe they gave away over 500 micheladas and there was a long line. As always, the michelada was great and refreshing and it was nice that it was a liter. Brownsville Beer Fest was also there sampling 4 craft beers and they were very generous with their servings.
Overall, it was a great event and I recommend you attend next year. There is plenty of food & drinks for you to sample and this event will not disappoint! I look forward to next year's Taste of La Frontera!
