For the past week or so I had been craving a shrimp cocktail, and it first started when I was in Matamoros and my favorite shrimp cocktail place was closed. Eager to get my fix I went to a spot that several people had recommended. My friend Thelma and I headed to El Amigo Seafood Restaurant located at 3955 Old Hwy 77.
We started off with a seafood stock, that was very warm and tasted fresh. We decided to order different items so we could try as much as the menu as we could. Thelma ordered a ceviche, and 2 tacos and I ordered a shrimp cocktail, a ceviche tostada and a shrimp taco. While we waited for our food we had some tostadas with their house salsa that had a nice smokey flavor. The food didn't take long to come out, and had very generous portions. The shrimp cocktail was very fresh and had the right amount of cilantro. It was served with crackers and I wanted to eat the whole thing, but I remembered more food was on its way.
I tried Thelma's ceviche, it had big chunks of fish and the perfect amount of lime juice. I will warn you that the salsa is very hot and I overdid it on my ceviche tostada, bummer!!!! The shrimp tacos were next, with a lightly fried tortilla and big chucks of shrimp with melted cheese, avocado and cilantro.
Overall, I had a wonderful experience and two days later I was back to picking up take out. The waitstaff is friendly, the place is clean, and prices are affordable. I noticed they are applying for a liquor license which will make it even better when I can order a cold beer with the delicious food. El Amigo has two locations in Brownsville.
