Potato au Gratin
Made this recipe for Christmas Eve dinner and was a huge hit! Who doesn't love potatoes??
This recipe takes about 15 min to put together and then another 45-50 min in the oven.
You can make this the day before, place in refrigerator and just reheat in the oven the following day for 15 minutes at 350F
Serves: 4-6 people
2 lbs of starchy potatoes (russet potatoes are great)
1/2 peeled garlic clove
1/4 cup of minced garlic
4 tablespoons of butter
2 teaspoons salt
2 teaspoon pepper
1 1/2 cups of sharp cheddar cheese
2 cups of heavy cream
2 -3 tablespoons thyme
Preheat oven to 350 F. Rub an oval baking dish with the 1/2 peeled garlic clove and 1 tablespoon of butter.
Thinly slice the potatoes (use a mandolin if you can so they are all the same size) and put in a bowl with cold water. Remove the potatoes from the cold water and pat dry them with a towel .
Spread half of the potatoes on the dish and then add half of the garlic, half of the salt, pepper, heavy cream and cheese. Repeat the process again with the second half. If you have a smaller bowl then you may need to do 3 layers. Make sure the cheese is at the very top.
Cover with foil and bake for 40 or 45 minutes. Remove the foil and bake for another 10 minutes for top to be golden. Remove from oven and wait about 10-15 min before serving.
